Scholarship
History:
On March 7, 1997, the Council
passed a resolution to create the Albert Shanker Scholarship Endowment Fund.
The Council honors his service as a pioneer and outstanding leader of the National
American Federation of Teachers. At the February 29, 2008 Scholarship Meeting,
the Committee added the name “Lacatena” to the scholarship title
in honor of past CNJSCL President Marco Lacatena. The Fund is dedicated to help
full time undergraduate students enrolled at any of the nine State Colleges/Universities
represented by the Council. The granting of the respective scholarships is based
upon the applicant’s merits.
$1,000 in scholarship funds ($9,000 total) will be available to each of the nine state colleges/universities for their respective locals to determine the choice of recipients and disbursement.*
Recipient Eligibility:
The scholarship is limited to students who:
a. Are enrolled as full time, undergraduate students at Montclair State University the time the award payment is made;
b. Are relatives of a CNJSCL or NJ AFL-CIO member whose union membership has been consistent for one (1) year or more.
Criteria for Selection:
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of:
a. The online essay describing the role of 21st Century Unionism in developing new leadership and enhancing civic participation.
b. An online recommendation from a union member outside of the applicant’s family.

Whichever channel of disbursement the Local has traditionally used in awarding its Local scholarships may be used in this instance as well. Yet, it is ultimately the responsibility of the recipient to consult their financial or tax consultants regarding this matter.
